Why Wellness Matters for Black Men Black men carry unique burdens—stressors rooted in systemic racism, economic inequities, and cultural expectations—that can weigh heavily on their mental, emotional, and physical well-being. These challenges often go unseen and unspoken, yet their impact is profound, creating ripples that touch every aspect of life. Wellness is more than self-care; it is an act of resistance and renewal. By prioritizing their well-being, Black men not only nurture their own health but also fortify the strength and resilience of their families and communities. Wellness is the foundation for breaking cycles of stress and reclaiming joy, peace, and purpose. Isoke Baptiste Bio: Isoke Baptiste founded The Wellness Garden three years ago as a sanctuary born from her personal journey of healing and her heartfelt desire to guide others on their paths to wellness. With dual board certifications as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Isoke's professional journey began in 2012 as a Clinical Vascular Nurse at The George Washington University. There, she earned a Master of Science in Nursing with academic honors. Her dedication was recognized with the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Traineeship Award for two consecutive years during her graduate studies. She later added a Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing from Liberty University, also achieving academic honors. Through her diverse experiences in vascular care, primary medicine, women’s health, and psychiatry, Isoke discovered her true calling in mental health and advocacy. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as a Nurse Practitioner consultant for the DC Department of Disability Services, championing patients’ rights to quality care. These experiences deepened her understanding of the systemic barriers that shape individual well-being and inspired her commitment to equitable, personalized care. Isoke's approach to mental health reflects her belief that healing requires addressing the stories we carry and the systems that influence our lives. She is a constant gardener—of both plants and people—nurturing growth, resilience, and hope. With a voice of calm assurance, she reminds her patients of their worthiness and offers compassionate support through candid, collaborative dialogue. Beyond her professional life, Isoke finds joy in simple, grounding moments: walking with her loyal dog, Teigen, sharing laughter with her daughter Ava, or tending to her lush garden, where she cultivates physical, spiritual, and emotional growth. Isoke is deeply committed to dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health in the Black community. Her decade-long career has included roles in direct care, advocacy, and leadership, giving her unique insight into the challenges faced by underserved populations. She bridges these gaps through culturally competent practices and individualized care, ensuring that every person feels seen, heard, and supported on their journey to healing. Isoke’s work is a testament to her unwavering belief that healing is a shared experience, grounded in humanity and nourished by the seeds of understanding and care. Antoine Trowers Bio: Antoine Trowers is the visionary founder of Ubuntu Center for Wellness, a sanctuary for mental health and healing located in Prince George's County, Maryland. This pioneering organization is dedicated to serving disenfranchised and vulnerable populations, offering them the support and care they need to thrive. Antoine's journey to founding Ubuntu Center for Wellness began with a deep commitment to social services. He honed his skills and expanded his impact while working at various agencies and non-profits in Washington, D.C., where his focus was always on uplifting those in need. His path led him to the District of Columbia Public Schools, where he joined the Office of Early Childhood Education. It was here that Antoine forged vital relationships with fellow social workers and gained invaluable experience. Encouraged by mentors who recognized his potential, Antoine pursued further education, enrolling in Howard University’s esteemed School of Social Work. There, he deepened his understanding of social justice, advocacy, and the therapeutic process, building a strong foundation for his future work. Equipped with this knowledge, Antoine made a profound impact within the DCPS school system, working with children and families. He facilitated group therapy sessions for parents, particularly fathers, and provided direct support to children through the Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) model. His work touched countless lives, helping to strengthen family bonds and foster healthier communities. As Antoine continued his professional journey, he further developed his expertise in working with children and adults grappling with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges. His passion for the therapeutic process and his dedication to building meaningful clinical relationships with clients became the cornerstone of his career. It was during this time that Antoine realized his true calling: to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health and to bring healing and hope to underserved communities. A pivotal moment in Antoine's life came during his studies at Howard University when he had the opportunity to travel to Cape Town, South Africa, for a study abroad program. There, he was introduced to the concept of "Ubuntu," a philosophy that translates to "I am because we are." This profound idea resonated deeply with Antoine, becoming the guiding principle of his life and work. Through the Ubuntu Center for Wellness, Antoine is committed to making a lasting impact on the world, embodying the spirit of Ubuntu in every aspect of his practice. However, Antoine's most important accomplishment is not found in his professional achievements, but in his relationship with his children. Raising them has been a journey of deep personal healing, allowing Antoine to nurture and mend his own wounded inner child. The love and connection he shares with his children have brought him unparalleled joy and fulfillment, grounding his life's work in the purest form of love and healing. - GET TO KNOW ME | Wellness Garden
Top of Page MY NAME IS ISOKE BAPTISTE. HOW I STARTED PRACTICING SINCE WHAT I DO IN A NUTSHELL WHAT I PRIORITIZE WHAT I LEARNED I FEEL YOU. MY DEBILITATING ANXIETY WHAT WE DON'T KNOW CAN HURT US TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH MY NAME IS ISOKE BAPTISTE. I'M A HUMAN FIRST AND I TAKE PRIDE IN SEEING THE FULL HUMANITY IN PEOPLE. As a board-certified mental health nurse practitioner, I take a holistic approach to health and focus primarily on mental health. SEE MY CREDENTIALS I started my career working as a Clinical Vascular Nurse in 2012 at The George Washington University, where I completed a Master of Science in Nursing and a Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing, both with academic honors. HOW I STARTED I began my healing journey in 2010, to achieve the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual balance I craved. This transformation inspired me to study nursing and start my own practice, to bring this powerful experience to others. 0 5 1 2 PRACTICING SINCE Nurses are teachers at their core. While doctors diagnose, nurses treat and plan. WHAT I DO My main job is to educate you and help you understand the state you are in. The ability to diagnose and prescribe along with a masters degree in nursing is a beautiful marriage. IN A NUTSHELL I can prescribe medication, including anti-depressants such as medical marijuana depending on your needs, psychological state and degree of depression. I then check back with you through telemedicine to get an update on your mental state and adjust medication as we continue to do regular, weekly, biweekly or monthly meetings. When consulted, I touch upon every area of your life. WHAT I PRIORITIZE I recognize the role systems play in our internal worlds, the stories we tell about ourselves, and the lives we lead. Which is why I prioritize equal access, personalized care and patient education. I am here to help you understand why you feel a certain way and how your mental state is connected to your physical health, affecting everything from your immune system to your vital organs. When you thoroughly understand all is connected, the path to healing will become crystal clear. A lot of times, we don't realize we are depressed because we associate depression with extreme mental states. But depression often presents itself in the details, where you feel something is just off and wrong. Depression can be as simple as not having the energy you normally have; or it can stir up feelings of guilt, sadness or inadequacy where you think you failed as a mother, a coworker, a sister or a daughter, simply because you are not doing these things that society dictates and makes you feel like you should. WHAT I LEARNED Depression presents itself in a myriad of ways. I FEEL YOU. Even though we are not exactly the same, I can understand what you are going through. Because, I went through it, too. MY DEBILITATING ANXIETY During the pandemic, I found myself in a debilitating state of anxiety. I was having insomnia with classic symptoms. I just couldn’t shake it. I knew, I needed help! I first found a therapist and as I talked through my issues, with my therapist's guidance, I decided to ease my healing process with an antidepressant. I have been on Lexapro for over a year now. It not only supports my healing journey, but also helps me relate to my patients. WHAT WE DON'T KNOW CAN HURT US When you have poor relationships, a lot of times the common denominator is you. But, remember that all our experiences come from childhood. The adult life is an imprint of the early emotional and physical developmental stages. If you experienced those developmental stages in a positive way, you adapt well to adulthood. If you had negative experiences - if you weren’t nurtured as a baby, if you weren’t given confidence, if you were abused, all of that affects how you experience life today. I, myself, am discovering my issues in therapy. Those experiences enable an understanding of why I am the way I am, and help me coach things in a fully aware mindset. To give a gardening reference, water is important for a plant to grow. But it doesn’t matter how much water you put in, the plant will not grow and bloom, unless you clean the soil first. And, that's exactly where we start. The problem may stem from unhealed emotional childhood wounds, you don’t even know exists. That is why we need to start from the soil. TAKE A LEAP OF FAITH Healing is a limitless journey where you add positive components piece by piece, to slowly cultivate a balanced, colorful garden. When you put yourself first, when you do the internal work, when you start talking, the healing process begins. And just like a beautiful vine that grows and expands, it starts spreading to every area of your life. You have a better relationship with your spouse, your partner, your children, your friends, your work colleagues and most importantly, you have a better relationship with yourself! Believe in your worthiness and commit to cultivating your own wellness garden. LET'S DO SOME GARDENING TOGETHER

Isoke Baptiste is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. She started her career working as a Clinical Vascular Nurse in 2012 at The George Washington University , where she completed a Master of Science in Nursing and a Graduate Certificate in Psychiatric Nursing, both with academic honors. During her MSN program, she was the recipient of the Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner Traineeship Award for two years in a row. Upon gaining experience in Vascular Surgery, Preventative Medicine, Women's Health, and Psychiatry, Isoke found her calling in advocacy and mental health, when, as a Nurse Practitioner consultant, she passionately fought for patients’ right to the best care in The Department of Disability Services, DC Government during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Isoke recognizes the role systems play in our internal worlds, the stories we tell about ourselves, and the lives we lead, which is why she prioritizes patient education, equal access and personalized care. As a single mom, an inherent caregiver, constant gardener and a human above all else, she is gifted at seeing the full humanity in people and believes in your worthiness. She constantly works to remind you that you are not alone, that you matter, that healing is a journey, only possible through candid, collaborative dialogue. In her free time, you can find Isoke taking a walk with her lovely dog, Tiegen, sharing playful jokes and laughs with her seven siblings, or spending tranquil time in her evergreen garden - feeding the soil, planting seeds, watering flowers or harvesting crops either physically, spiritually or mentally.
